Every log has a purpose.

Wood Joint Studio is located in the heart of the Redwood forests of Northern California. Over the years we have worked with hundreds of billets of Old Growth and Sinker Redwood and have been amazed by how truly different each piece is in density, grain and color. No use is better, in our minds, for this precious resource than tonewood or soundboards for luthiers.

Instrument making is a technical art and the materials used can make all the difference. Luthiers weigh the many attributes of the wood used in their own way. But, the angle of the grain is critical to making the sound resonate. At Wood Joint Studio Tops each slice is adjusted with our custom made bandsaw table so that the wood is perfectly quarter sawn. The ends are waxed and we label and sticker the tops. They are air dried to about 12% moisture content. Each set is sanded to at least 150 grit and trimmed to size.
